Oita Sights: Beppu City Hotspring Tour

Beppu is a unique hot spring village in Oita prefecture. Beppu produces more hot spring waters than any other onsen resort town in the country, and is home to the 'Hells of Beppu'. The 'Hells' (Jigoku in Japanese) are several hot springs which are for viewing, rather than bathing.

Your guide will take you to Umi Jigoku, known as the 'Sea Hell', and Kamado Jigoku, called the 'Cooking Pot Hell'.

Umi Jigoku

'Jigoku' is the name given to a hot spring that is too dangerous to bathe in, and the term is often translated to 'hell' in English.

Umi Jigoku is one of the more beautiful 'hells' in the Kannawa district, and is known as the 'Sea Hell' for its bright, blue boiling water.

Make your way to Beppu Station to meet with your guide for your morning (8:00am) or afternoon (1:00pm) tour. The tour will take around 5 hours.

Stop by Umijigoku, the Sea Hell, which is known for its stunning, bright blue waters. But don't be fooled by its beauty - those blue waters and boiling hot!

We then travel to Kamado Jigoku, Cooking Pot Hell. Taste the hot spring water and enjoy the hand and foot baths. Then visit Jigokumushi Kobo Steam Cooking Centre to see how the locals make Hell Steam Cuisine using steam from the hot springs.

Optional: If you would like to try your hand at cooking Hell Steam Cuisine please purchase your ingredients there or bring your own and rent your steam chamber. 510 yen will get you 30 minutes of cooking time. Tea, utensils and condiments are provided and volunteers are there to explain the process.

Your tour will conclude back at JR Beppu Station.
